Ten men were arrested last summer on federal drug trafficking charges, U.S. Attorney John Durham said. The arrests came following the investigation by the FBI, ATF and Waterbury Police Department.
Durham said that the investigation was targeting violent offenders and drug traffickers in Waterbury. “This level of cooperation between state and federal prosecutors, the FBI, the Waterbury Police Department, and the ATF, has been extraordinary,” he said in a statement last year.
On Wednesday, Alexander Calderon, of Thomaston, was sentenced in Hartford federal court to 46 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, heroin and crack in January.
In the fall of 2017, the investigation was launched into drug trafficking by suspected members of “Addicted to Money,” a street gang operating out of Waterbury. The 10-month investigation, which included court-authorized wiretaps, physical surveillance and controlled purchases of heroin and crack cocaine, resulted in federal charges against Calderon and 10 other individuals.
The investigation determined that Calderon “regularly sold heroin and crack cocaine to customers,” Durham said.
“This joint investigation is an example of how things are supposed to be done, and the results speak for themselves,” said Waterbury State's Attorney, Maureen Platt. Platt said that she, and state prosecutors from her office, expect to continue to work closely with federal prosecutors on this case, and others.
